I try to improve my understanding of (agro-) ecosystems. In my beginnings the focus was on soil erosion while now I am increasingly fascinated by stable isotopes as indicators of many ecosystem processes. Simultaneously, I gradually moved from arable to grassland systems.

I hold degrees of the Technische Universität München (Dipl. Ing. agr., Dr. agr., Dr. agr. habil.), served in several scientific societies (among others: vice president of the German Soil Science Society, council member of the German Soils Association and of the European Society for Soil Conservation) and in the editorial board of several scientific journals, presently: Bodenschutz, Soil & Tillage Research,  Catena (former Joint Editor-in-Chief) and Journal of Soil and Water Conservation (Assiociate Editor).
