Biography

Steven Verhelst studied chemistry at Leiden University, the Netherlands. As a graduate student in bio-organic synthesis, he worked under the guidance of Jacques van Boom (Leiden Institute of Chemistry) and Stan van Boeckel (Organon). For his post-doctoral work, he joined the group of Matt Bogyo at the department of pathology of the  Stanford University, School of Medicine. Since 2008 he is an Emmy Noether group leader at the Technical University Munich. His laboratory is focused on chemical approaches to study (intramembrane) serine proteases.

Research interests: bio-organic chemistry, solid phase synthesis, chemical proteomics, serine proteases, intramembrane proteases.

Other interests: (molecular) cooking, reading & writing fiction, travelling, listening to music (heavy metal, alternative rock), and watching movies from Paul Verhoeven, Quentin Tarantino or Joel & Ethan Coen.
