In light of the growing world population, food security is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. The Research Department Plant Sciences investigates the biological principles that will enable securing and further improving of plant production systems while preserving resources and the environment in a society-oriented manner.

On the basis of fundamental research in biochemistry, cell biology as well as molecular and quantitative genetics members of the department address relevant questions from basic biology to crop science, horticulture and agronomy. In this context research is performed at different conceptual levels: from the interaction of molecules, via the biology of cells and tissues, to ecophysiology, precision farming and rating of sustainability at the farm level.

A particular focus is on molecular and physiological basics of production of high quality food, feed and biomass. The department is also concerned with translating knowledge from models to crops and from crop to crop.
